Introductory Notes:

1. When 816 and 817 Squadrons were formed in the UK, they initially used RN FAA aircraft on loan. The full known records of these aircraft in the RN and RAN are recorded here as are the early RN histories of most RAN aircraft before they were loaded in HMAS SYDNEY and HMAS VENGEANCE for passage to Australia.

2. During the early 1950s when HMAS SYDNEY and its squadrons served in company with the RN in East Asian waters during the Korean War and the subsequent deployment, there was free exchange of aircraft between the navies to enable squadrons to remain up to strength. Some of the attachments of RN aircraft were for fairly short periods. The complete histories of aircraft known to have served with RAN squadrons are given here.

3. Records of movements of RAN aircraft between units are still being investigated and there are gaps and uncertainties. Throughout the service of the Fairey Firefly in the RAN there were changes of codes as aircraft were moved between bases, ships and squadrons. Complete records of these changes have not been traced and those given below are taken from photographs and available sources. Information on additional codes (with provenance) is always welcome.

4. In November 1951 the company Fairey-Clyde Aviation Company Pty. Ltd. at Bankstown, which did much heavy maintenance for the RAN, changed its name to Fairey Aviation Company of Australasia Pty. Ltd. In the table below the change is reflected in the short titles ‘Fairey Clyde, Bankstown’ and ‘Fairey, Bankstown’ used on appropriate dates.

The pilot, George Markey and his engineer, Bill Spence, were sued for $400,000.00 on the grounds of negligence and a court battle carried on until 2001. The court found in favour of Michael Wansey. 5/2/90 Acquired by Bruce Simpson of Classic Aviation for $100.00 and removed to the company’s premises at Bankstown Airport for restoration using the forward fuselage and centre section of WB518 from Griffiths, NSW. The forward fuselage and centre section of WD828 was restored to static display standard and incorporated in WB518 which was restored to display in Griffith. 4/94 Partially restored acft was purchased by Captain Eddie Kurdziel of Fort Collins, Colorado, USA and airfreighted to Fort Collins, Colorado, USA where it was restored to Flying Condition by Ray Middleton’s QA Aviation of North America. 6/4/02 First flight after restoration and registered as N518WB but marked initially as ‘WB377’ ‘201/K’ then later as ‘WB518’ ‘201/K’ but with Royal Navy titles.
