Operated by 3 Sqn, RAAF and flow by several unit's pilots,
Given the made up serial "A421" for Australia, CR42, Number 1,
Given an overall silver finish at one point,
Still with 3 Sqn at Benina in March 1941,
04/04/1941 Burnt and destroyed at Got-es-Sultan Landing Ground to prevent it from falling back into "enemy" hands.

From 3 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force History, "3 Squadron at War", a note written early April, 1941 (during the Squadron's first retreat in front of Rommel):
"To the great regret of the Squadron, an Italian CR42 captured in January 1941 at Martuba, which had been flown by several pilots in the intervening months, had to be destroyed. It had been the intention to preserve this trophy of war and later have it taken back to Australia for presentation to the War Museum in Canberra".

If the caption is correct, then this aircraft was shot down by a 3 Squadron, RAAF Gloster Gladiator.

This aircraft appears to have been from 238a Squadriglie of the 101° Gruppo Bombardamento a Tuffo, based at Abar Nimeir,
According the to the AWM Image notes:
"Aussies examining the wreckage of an old Fiat biplane shot down behind their lines by the Royal Air Force.  This plane was one of five which flew over the British lines never to return. The pilot of this plane was not badly hurt, but was wearing one infantry boot and one flying boot."
Based on the markings, this aircraft appears to have been from 238a Squadriglie of the 101° Gruppo Bombardamento a Tuffo, based at Abar Nimeir.
